    Business Manager’s Report

Hello, Brothers and Sisters, and happy holiday season.

We are staying extremely busy at the Hall and we have had more JW and sub-JW calls come in over the past couple of months. Bigger jobs like the Scheels project have wound down, and we are seeing one go after some work in Stillwater for a data center – which may also spin off into some more 584 work down the line. Other developments are in the works, as well. Please make sure you are coming to Union meetings on the first Friday of each month to get the full, in-depth, not-for-publication updates from your Local on what’s happening with the work picture. We can relay some information here, but attending your meeting in-person remains the best and most accurate way to get future job info straight from the source. I thank you in advance for participating.

Speaking of participation, all we can say about this year’s Hall-O-Ween event is: “Wow.” You all really knocked it out of the park on putting together and participating in a great event. Our Hall-O-Ween extravaganzas started in 2020, the year of the pandemic, and many of your Local leaders and staff at the time felt that we needed a big IBEW 584 community event that was for the whole family that everyone could help with and participate in. I have to say that it’s now become our “Annual” Hall-O-Ween because it’s been successful year after year. This year, as in the past, we hosted costume contests, had great food and desserts, trunk-or-treating for the kids, rides, games, and some nice prizes. Thank you to the E-board and the membership for continuing to make funds available for this event and believing in the good it does to bring people together outside of work and in a way that many may not have in their everyday lives.

Not a lot of people in the nonunion world can know or appreciate this, but Labor Unions are one of the best – and, currently, sole remaining – ways of staying connected as a community of individuals, families, and bigger groups in the modern age. Back in 2000, there was an author named Robert Putnam who wrote a book called “Bowling Alone.” I mention it because it became a hugely influential book among economists and social science types who study labor unions and similar groups. One of the main ideas in this book was that you could see the decline of people thinking of themselves as “belonging to a community” right along with the drop in popularity of social bowling leagues (for example), which were huge in the last mid-century. Somewhere in there, and for various reasons, we became less of a group of “social” folks and more a “collection of individuals”, with fewer and fewer ties to the broader group and the bigger society. Nowadays, there are few institutions aside from churches and volunteer groups who do what we do. All that to say – It’s great to see so many Brothers, Sisters, friends, and family at our events, because it helps keep our bonds strong. At a time when we need connection and cohesion more than ever, you are helping make that happen.

Speaking of events: Please see below for a reminder about our Christmas and Service Pin Award party. You can RSVP by calling the Hall or by clicking here: https://form.jotform.com/242636061754154. Please RSVP by this Sunday! Thank you.

Lastly, I hope you got to enjoy a nice Thanksgiving with family and friends and that you are having a good holiday season so far. It’s the most wonderful time of the year, but it can also be challenging for those struggling or dealing with hurt or heartache. Please take the time to check in on your neighbors, especially elderly acquaintances, and it’s always a good time for a “Brotherhood check” or “Sisterhood check” on your fellow IBEW members and retirees to make sure people aren’t struggling in silence.

I look forward to seeing many of you at the next regularly-scheduled IBEW 584 meeting Jan. 3, 2025, at 7 pm at the Hall.

    Fraternally,

    Dustin Phelan

IBEW 584 Business Manager / Financial Secretary

    In Memoriam

    Brother Arthur ‘Wayne’ Haas

    December 11, 1947 - July 19, 2024

    Death Benefit No. 311

It is with deeply heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Arthur "Wayne" Haas, born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on December 11, 1947, and departed this world from his Broken Arrow, Oklahoma residence on July 19, 2024.

Wayne was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on December 11, 1947. He passed from this earth at his residence in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma on July 19, 2024. Wayne served as a staff sergeant in Vietnam from 1970 - 1971. He was married to his soulmate, Bobbie Lee Haas for 56 years until Bobbie’s passing. He worked as an electrician for many years until his eventual retirement. Wayne was a proud member of the IBEW International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

Bobbie and Wayne were blessed with three daughters: Ange Adkins-Gilbert, Jennifer Atwell, and Amy Haas. Moreover, Wayne was a grandpa to six grandkids and one great-grandson. He loved football, especially the Oklahoma Sooners! He and Bobbie would spend their Sunday evenings picking their NFL teams for the following week, and somehow Bobbie always picked more winners than Wayne! He loved to golf in his free time and never missed playing the Power Ball! He also loved to play a game called Gummy Drop on his tablet. This may sound crazy, but Wayne kept a 10-year streak on that game, never missed a day. Sometimes his grand-sons, Jared and Jacob helped him, but they always played each day.

It would be very difficult to find a person who had anything negative to say about Wayne. He was a great husband, father, grandpa, and friend. He gave all the kids and grandkids advice when needed. He was incredibly generous (he never told a grandchild “No”). He absolutely loved being a grandpa; he was so happy when the girls were having boys, but after 4 grandsons, he asked if maybe we could have some girls! He got his wish and Ange and Amy both had baby girls. Wayne was quiet with a gentle soul, but he still had a very strong presence about him.

Fly high dad, I know you’re back with mom and happier than ever.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Haas, and Norene Haas; his loving wife, Bobbie Haas; his daughters, Amy Haas, and Ange Haas; his grandsons, Jared Haas-Upky, and Jacob Haas; and his sister, Linda Davenport. He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Joy Atwell, and husband Shawn Atwell; his grandchildren: Hunter Adkins, Carter Atwell, Cheyenne Adkins, and Jenna Haas; as well as his great grandson, Laith Owen Adkins; his brother, Larry Vee Haas and many other family members and friends that will miss him deeply.
